Increased police operations against unlawful betting got five suspects in Cavite and another five in Catanduanes in the days prompting Christmas. Senior Superintendent William M. Segun, Cavite Police Provincial Office chief, announced the capture last Saturday of three ladies and two men found playing "majhong" at a house in Barangay Benjamin Tirona in General Mariano Alaverez, a region in Cavite's fifth District. Be that as it may, "saclang patay" – an old Spanish card amusement played in wakes – keeps on flourishing in the territory with next to zero activity from police.
Inhabitants saw that the police have deliberately ignored to this unlawful yet conventional type of betting. In Catanduanes, a court-justified assault by police at a house in Barangay Dariao, Caramoan last December 19 prompted the capture of five individuals associated with "lotteng" operations. Police agents captured Gemalyn B. Romero, 30; Daisy S. Capistrano, 44; Matea S. Bongalos; Maxi P. Canicula, 19; and a male 16-year-old understudy from a neighboring town. Seized from the suspects by Municipal Police Station and Criminal Investigation and Detection Team agents were "lotteng" paper; money adding up to P3,440; and one Honda Wave 125 MC bearing plate number EC 76975 supposedly utilized as an escape vehicle.
